**********Please note that during transit, if there is exceptionally rough handling by the postal service(s) which can very occasionally occur, if the seal is compromised this can cause contamination away from the injection nipple (don't shake after initial injection). Just send a photo. If in the unlikely event this occurs you will be refunded or another box posted free of charge, refund or replacement is up to the discretion of the buyer.**********
**The tubs aren’t completely full, less is more as they can be shaken once established for faster growth, therefore they can be used for growing mushrooms from Rye by mixing the mycelium the traditional way with just enough pasteurised substrate of choice (coir/straw/etc) to fill the container to the top to colonise for a large yield when pins begin to form.**
"This listing is for a 1.2L mushroom mycelium grow box, with gas exchange filter membrane, a grey injection port and sterilised rye berry grain substrate. The grain substrate weight in each sterilized box is approximately 600 g. Each box is about 2/3 to 3/4 full to facilitate easy shaking and quick mycelium growth after inoculation with your preferred spores or mycelium."
Why use grow boxes instead of bags? Because these grow boxes are designed to be re-used over and over, and are therefore cost effective whilst being environmentally friendly without the plastic waste after each use. "Grow bags", although cheap, are notoriously prone to developing micro pinholes, and then inevitable contamination.
The filter patch used will keep out contaminants and promote excellent gas exchange, and unlike the other common yellow polymer filter type seen in sterilisation boxes - this design will allow pressure equalisation after sterilization without collapsing the container. Therefore, there is no need to partially open the lid after sterilisation with this design (which is necessary with the other type), this means minimised risk of contamination.
This mycelium grow box listing is for:
1 x 1200ml grow box + rye berry substrate (autoclave pre-sterilised, ready for inoculation)
2 x alcohol swabs
Mycelium grow boxes are suitable for sterilising popcorn, grain, birdseed, chicken corn and many other common mycelium substrates.
These come pre-sterilized with rye grain and nutrients to get you started, all you have to do is inject spores or mycelium solution (using the injection ports), to begin colonising the grain with mycelium.
Each box is 1.2 L volume, and is pressure cooker safe for easy re-sterilisation of the substrate of your choice.
Rye grain substrate is an excellent all round substrate, compatible with most commonly grown mushrooms, included Oyster varieties, Reishi, and many others.
The most efficient way to inoculate, is to inject the spore/culture solution and then wait for visible mycelium growth, wait a few to several days then give it a good shake and allow to fully colonise. Inject using a single port only, don't shake until mycelium is established under the injection port, probably will first be noticed at the bottom of the box as the grains are fully hydrated so spore/culture solution will tend to flow to the bottom.
This is far more effective than injecting spores/culture using several injection ports (as that increases risk of contamination) and expect full mycelium colonisation within a week to a few weeks, depending on the particular mycelium/mushroom strain.
See the last image for an example of a fully colonised box of Reishi mushroom mycelium (Ganoderma Lucidum / Lingzhi) after only a few weeks mycelium growth.
The filter patches also come in a variety of colours - useful for colour coding different strains. White will be supplied by default unless you specify a preferred colour. Just send a message to let me know your preference immediately after placing an order.
Please note, culture/mycelium syringe or spore syringe is NOT included with this listing. You must supply or source the spores/culture of your choice to inoculate this mycelium grow box.
The box filter patches also come in different configurations (see images), no matter which - it will still be the same membrane type.
----------------------------------------------------------------
To sterilise with your own substrate later on, pressure cook for 90 minutes. As with all plastic/polypropylene grow boxes, don't stack multiple boxes on top of each other when pressure cooking/autoclaving, as this can cause some deformation of the box. After sterilisation it's always good practise to seal the lid seal/rim with parafilm tape (or masking tape, etc) around the perimeter to provide extra sealing and support for the lid should the box be accidentally squeezed, dropped, etc. You want to maintain 100% sterile conditions, if the seal is compromised it will need to be re-sterilised. All boxes will be supplied with a parafilm/tape seal already in place and cling film wrapped for shipping.
